Soviet MiG-17 diorama in 1/72
For me, a model really comes alive when it’s part of a diorama, more than just a kit; it becomes a story frozen in time. So when I dug through the stash and found Airfix’s Soviet MiG-17, ICM’s ZiL-157 truck, and a set of CMK Soviet pilots with ground crew, I knew I had the perfect ingredients. Together, they weren’t just parts for a build; they were the start of a little scene waiting to take shape.
With the idea for the diorama in place, it was time to gather the key players of the scene. Each kit would bring its own character to the project, and together they’d form the snapshot I had in mind. The line-up included:
Airfix 1/72 MiG-17F
I was really pleased when Airfix released this kit, as the Soviet MiG-17 was a prominent aircraft of the Cold War. I have previously done a “what’s in the box” post about this kit, which you can find here. If you want to learn a bit more about the MiG-17, then pop over to my MiG-17 page.
ICM ZiL-157 Truck
Not a bad little kit. As with all the 1/72 ICM vehicle kits that I’ve built, the instructions are quite concise. They remind me of kits from the 1970s with regard to the instructions. Builds into a nice-looking truck and fits well on my little diorama.
CMK 1/72 Warsaw Pact Pilots and Warsaw Pact Mechanics
Two great little figure sets from CMK. You can see the details you get with these figures by reading my blog post reviewing the Warsaw Pact Pilots set.
Other bits and bobs
Basically, I raided my spares collection for Jerry cans and wooden crates. The oil drums I purchased from a seller on Etsy. Etsy is useful for finding affordable little items like the oil drums and even figures.

ICM 1/72 ZiL-157 Army Truck

I usful little kit to have if you intend to do any Warsaw Pact dioramas. In fact, ICM do quite a few different versions of ZiL trucks, including a Fuel Truck and a Mobile Electric Unit (both linked to Amazon).
