Modelu 1/48 RAF Post-War Pilot

I’m always on the lookout for decent figures to go with my builds, so when I came across Modelu’s range of RAF figures, I knew I’d have to buy one and see what I could do with it.

I decided on figure 50409-048 RAF Late 40s/1950s Pilot (see my blog post Cold War Bench Notes #5). Ordering was straightforward, and the figure arrived within the quoted delivery times.

Painting the Modelu 1/48 RAF Post-War Pilot

Thankfully, the figure isn’t wearing particularly complicated clothing, so only a handful of paints were needed.

Step 1 – Carefully remove the figure from its protective supports.

Step 2 – Clean the figure. I use isopropyl alcohol, but warm soapy water works just as well.

Step 3 – Prime the figure. I used Autotek Grey Plastic Primer.

Step 4 – Apply the base colours:

  • Skin: Vallejo 70.815 Basic Skin Tone
  • Cap: Tamiya XF-18 Medium Blue
  • Shirt: Tamiya XF-23 Light Blue
  • Overalls: Vallejo 70.903 Intermediate Blue
  • Cap badge: Citadel Sycorax Bronze
  • Shoes, tie and cap band: Vallejo 71.057 Black

Step 5 – Add the shadows:

  • Skin: Citadel Shade – Reikland Fleshshade
  • Uniform: Vallejo Model Wash 76.518 Black

Step 6 – Once I was happy with the shading, I gave the figure a quick drybrush with Vallejo 71.050 Light Grey.

Step 7 – Finally, I sealed everything with a coat of VMS XXL Matt Varnish.

I’m quite happy with the result. He looks the part from a normal viewing distance, and he’ll make a nice addition to the finished model.
