One or many model projects?

How many model projects do you have on the go? Do you build one model at a time or have multiple model projects running?

Personally, I like to have a few projects on the go. I’m quite a slow builder, as I like things to dry for a good few hours or days, especially primers, varnishes, and when glueing together large sections of a model.

In addition, I also tend to get excited about new ideas for model projects, be that a single build or diorama/vignette ideas, etc. These ideas are not always Cold War related, but the majority are.

I’m also quite mindful that my stash is growing faster than my build rate. However, I do kid myself that I’m building my stash for my retirement! (I’m that side of 60 now).

Now I’ve confessed to being a multi-model project builder, here are my current projects and a quick note about them.

Tamiya 1/48 Sea Harrier FRS.1

I started this one after finishing the excellent Airfix 1/48 Meteor FR.9, it’s turned into quite a slog to get it to an almost complete stage. My enthusiasm was quite high at the start; I even made a replacement ejection seat for the cockpit. I also attempted to tidy up the engine intakes and the jet nozzles. But sadly, this has not been an enjoyable kit to build, and I think that shows in my results of the build so far.

But I’m so close to the end now, it will be completed.

Trumpeter 1/48 Sumpermarine Attacker F.1

Now this model project I am enjoying at the moment. It does have a few fit issues, and I’m currently in the process of hiding some seam lines, but hey, don’t most kits? Once the seam lines have been sorted and the primer re-applied, fingers crossed for a nice application of the main colours and the final small parts added.

Airfix 1/72 Red Arrows BAe Hawk T.Mk1

This model project is part of our Model Club (Taunton and District Scale Modellers) Summer build. The kit is from the Airfix ‘Starter Kits’ range, and has been a very nice build. Some areas are very basic and simplified, and I’ve had to add a spare smoke generator pack (pinched from my previous Hawk build).

As part of this build, I also used Hataka’s A276 BS Signal Red, from Hataka’s new improved range. I have to say I was very impressed at how well it went on via airbrush. Ill be looking at Hataka’s range more closely in the future.

ICM 1/72 BTR60PB

Another kit that I’m making is making very slow progress. Mostly because I’ve been attempting to replace most of the grab handles on the side of the kit with wire. It’s actually at a stage where it can be primed. Plan to finish it in East German (DDR) colours, it can then go with my PT-76.

Masterbox 1/32 Napoleon’s Red Lancer

Yep, not a Cold War subject, but sometimes it’s nice just to build something completely different. Masterbox claim these are 1/32, seems more 1/35 to me.

This model project is also letting me experiment with using oils for shading and highlights. I’ve used a mixture of acrylics and enamels for the base colours.

The plan is to finish it on a nice little vignette.

Let me know in the comments if you are a single project builder or a multi-project builder. Also, mention what you are building; it would be great to see what you are working on.
